Prime Minister Rishi Sunak Fails To Respond To Open Letter

25th July 2023

Dear Prime Minister,

We are writing to you on behalf of the 18,000 members of the British Pakistan Foundation.

Following our recent letter to you, we are writing to request an urgent meeting with you to discuss the recent racially inflammatory comments made by the Home Secretary, including those singling out British Pakistani males “holding cultural values totally at odds with British values”. It has been over three months since our original letter to you and the lack of response from your office therefore signifies that this issue is not important enough to be addressed by yourself, nor the Home Secretary.

Our disappointment arises not only from the content of Ms. Braverman’s remarks which clearly fly in the face of your affirmed declaration to lead with integrity, professionalism, and accountability but also from the fact that, to date, we have not witnessed a clear public statement from your office rejecting her inflammatory rhetoric.

As a democratic nation that prides itself on principles of respect, inclusivity, and harmony, it is essential that our leaders condemn any form of racist rhetoric. Ms. Braverman’s recent statements have been widely regarded as recklessly divisive and have been rejected by senior members of your own party and many communities.

In times like these, it is crucial for our leaders to actively address such situations, as their silence may inadvertently convey a sense of endorsement or complacency. Moreover, inaction encourages racism to thrive. The importance of fostering a sense of trust and reassurance within our diverse society cannot be overstated, and we firmly believe that it is the responsibility of our government to lead by example in promoting an environment of mutual respect and understanding.

We kindly request that you personally address this matter and make a public statement, reaffirming your commitment to a cohesive and inclusive society.

The British Pakistan Foundation urges you to meet with us to continue our dialogue and for you to listen to the real and lived experiences of members of our community.

We respectfully request a reply to this letter by 8th August 2023. We look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

The British Pakistan Foundation
