Father Figure: South Asian Art Through the Eyes of Wahab Jaffer, presents the art collection of the celebrated Pakistani artist and patron, Wahab Jaffer, alongside those of his own works inspired by the artists he supported and befriended.
The exhibition features works by over 20 modern artists from South Asia including Ali Imam (Pakistan), Bashir Mirza (Pakistan), Francis Newton Souza (India) and Murtaja Baseer (Bangladesh). As the exhibition examines the art Jaffer collected and created over the past 50 years, it also asks the viewer to consider the nature of the relationship between artists and collectors.
This is a particularly significant discussion in light of the rise of collectors and patronage in South Asia. The exhibition asks audiences to examine how we host and build contemporary structures of art, it’s history with South Asian Art Collectors and the responsibility these collectors hold to further establish the arts of South Asia.
